Er... why such a strong reaction? I'd assume Criterion had the individual participants do QA checks of sound/video quality and had their individual recordings of the chat sent by the participants to be assembled together rather than it being actually recorded online. There is absolutely no way these people would every have been able to get together in the same room to discuss the movie, so you'd rather they just... don't try? I think it's fun, and the circumstances allowed them to maybe rope in a few more A-tier talking heads then they'd usually be able to get for one feature.

Provided quality control is applied, I don't have a problem at all with this video call arrangement going forward. It potentially means that contributors who wouldn't manage to come together for whatever reason can do so, and presumably is a more economical option for labels than sending a cameraman across the country or further.

I enjoy seeing their homes/offices in the background images; interesting variety of artwork! Is Kenneth Turan (I think that's him in the center square) using one of those standard Zoom backgrounds, or is that his real (brightly lit, wall-of-windows, vaulted ceiling) home?

I enjoy perusing the bookshelves visible in video images when some of the critics, authors, and scholars speak from their homes and offices; interesting that some put their own books in prominent spots to advertise, but others seemingly show random collections. My boys have loved Newman's column in Empire magazine for years, and they get a kick out of seeing him speak, his unique and flamboyant clothing, and especially pausing the video to examine what he has on his shelves and walls.

I'm very pleased indeed with Kier-La Janisse's featurette on Joy Bang for Indicator's Cisco Pike, which was self-filmed on an iPad under lockdown conditions. We did technical tests with her in advance and reckoned it would be OK, at least in terms of there being nothing distracting in terms of AV quality - and happily this turned out to be the case.

Obviously, there are no plans to make this arrangement permanent or even regular, but in this case it was a very practical alternative to simply cancelling the piece or delaying the disc. And in many ways the rough-and-ready approach suited the subject very well.
