Any clue as to who or what the 'NL' DVD label is? There's a R2 of Tati's Trafic, available exclusively from Moviemail, potentially a cheaper and more ethical alternative to the Criterion.

All the evidence (such as the name and the fact that there's a Dutch language option) suggests it's a Dutch import, but I don't know anything about the label - or indeed whether 'NL' is its actual name or merely shorthand for Netherlands.

The film's original soundtrack is a mix of French, English and Dutch, which is reflected by the info. There's no mention of Dutch subtitles, only English -- although their info may be incomplete.

Oh, fair enough - I haven't seen the film myself.

I also note that the catalogue number is NL001, which suggests a new label (regardless of nationality).

Hmm. It's a bit too expensive for a blind buy. I'll wait and see if anything more turns up :)

Hi chaps-

I was thinking the same as you all, so I emailed the folks at MovieMail yesterday to see if they could shed any light of the subject. I received this reply this afternoon:

---

Thank you for your email. Enelle Productions are a new label and this is
their first release. They have supplied little product information regarding
this film, but our reviewer has told me that he thought the review copy we
received was of good quality.

As the original theatrical release had a 1.37:1 ration I would expect the DVD
to have the same, or possibly a 1.33:1 ratio. We do not have any information
regarding the audio mix.

Kind regards
Peter Curtis

Not exactly comprehensive, but the instinct about a new label is right on the money. Worth a chance, do you think?

Criterion discs are tested on animals. A dog has to watch every single edition. And listen to the Ebert commentaries.

Is this topic for new studio that released Trafic in UK or for any DVD release for Netherlands? :?

My bad. Searched "netherlands" and got this. Should've started a new thread in international dvds.

Just finished watching the NL edition of Trafic. For the first 40 minutes the disc looks absolutely fine (although the credits are slightly windowboxed), but then all of a sudden a dramatic downward shift in clarity occurs - mid-scene! - which continues to affect the rest of the film. Very odd. Incidentally there are no extras, whilst the subtitles are optional.
