I for one am excited for Bend of the River and can't understand anyone calling it the worst of their collabs. I hope Far Country will follow

Negativity is kind of the name of the game around here. People fall over each other to be the first to shit on something.
We haven't shit on you yet. Doesn't that count for something?

In all seriousness, my previous post (like the above comment) was facetious. I didn't think anyone would take it at face value given how ridiculous it was.

Oh give me a break. I've said nice things about KL before and will no doubt do so again, but the notion of Thunder Bay as an upper (or even mid) tier Mann/Stewart film is dubious at best. Funnily enough, KL Insider's Top 3 would be mine as well (though not in the same order), so whichever rep posted that and I even have some common ground despite our disagreement

If you haven’t noticed this is a much more critical forum than the golly gee forums that accept everything as good and peachy. There is nothing wrong with dissenting to works in a directors canon. That’s what makes this place fun and interesting.

I'm guessing someone in Universal's licensing department is both an actual cinephile who knows his stuff and an asshole.
Winchester '73 was licensed to someone else. And most likely The Far Country, which was also not available. Not sure why all this negativity toward 2 classic Mann/Stewart films, we're pretty sure all the completists are psyched about these releases.
Don't get it either.

I love Bend of the River. Still need to see The Naked Spur, but it's probably second to me behind The Man from Laramie when it comes to Mann/Stewart.

You still need to see The Naked Spur but you're probably ranking it second among the Mann/Stewart films? I guess I've missed your point.
Kino Insider wrote:Not sure why all this negativity toward 2 classic Mann/Stewart films
Probably because it's unreasonable to slap the overused marketing term "classic" on something and expect that to mean anything to people who've seen the film and have a different appraisal, especially since even the K-L rep acknowledged that Thunder Bay is toward the bottom of the Mann/Stewart films. Maybe completists are psyched, but others may have different views. I'm a Mann completist insofar as I've tried to accumulate as many of his films to my collection as possible, but I am not "psyched" for Thunder Bay. If other completists are, great. That one, Glenn Miller Story, and Strategic Air Command were all projects that Stewart found and asked Mann to direct, and Mann complied. The plot of Thunder Bay alone is ridiculous. The westerns were the real interest in that collaboration.

And obviously differing opinions can help foster discussion. Opinions that are positive about a given thing aren't necessarily preferable to negative opinions about that thing, though of course those who work for the company releasing that thing would probably tend to say otherwise.

I don't see what is unclear? For me, it is probably second best in my own personal ranking of only what I have seen from the Mann/Stewart westerns. I mentioned not yet seeing The Naked Spur as a disclaimer since most put it at 1 or 2.

My point is just offering support for Bend of the River. I like the film, one of my favorite of the Mann/Stewart collaborations I've seen. That's literally it.

So I guess by "it's probably second" you meant Bend of the River, but I thought you meant The Naked Spur because that film was the subject of that sentence, immediately preceding "it's probably second." Sorry if I misunderstood.

It's also likely, considering the current KL releasing pace, that they won't only release consensual classics and masterpieces, so some releases are going to get some flak here or there.
At worst though, this jest has sparked a conversation with people talking about these movies or discussing the Mann / Stewart collaborations so it's certainly not lost.

They will doubtless be $8.99 each direct from Kino during one of their regular sales a few months after release. I own a couple hundred KL discs and I’ve never paid more than $11.99 at most for any of them.

I mean, no one paid $19.98 for the Universal set either. They're still charging ~600% of the DVDs' cost, and knowing that most who will want them will want all of them

On a positive note, one release this month (10/30) that should be very interesting is Old Ironsides, a unique silent that's never been out on DVD or Blu-ray until now. For the battle scenes in it, Paramount used a new widescreen process, Magnascope (which may be familiar from the following year's Wings). A box office flop, the film fell into deep obscurity. An earlier film by the same director, The Covered Wagon, came out from Kino earlier this year, though I don't think I've ever seen it.

The original New York Times review described the premiere at the Rivoli on Broadway:
As an additional feature of the entertainment, the scene that ended the first half of the picture was a startling surprise, for the standard screen disappeared and the whole stage, from the proscenium arch to the boards, was filled with a moving picture of a replica of Old Ironsides. This brought every man and woman in the audience to their feet and Dr. Hugo Riesenfeld's orchestra and a chorus of voices further stirred the spectators with "Ship of State." Some conception of the magnificent effect of this enlarged screen can be gained from its dimensions, which are 30 by 40 feet, whereas the usual screen...is about 12 by 18. Following the intermission most of the scenes of "Old Ironsides," were depicted by this apparatus

Thanks for the heads-up! I def give props to KL for licensing and putting out silents, even when it seems like their core audience would prefer more Chuck Norris movies

Color 85 Minutes 1.85:1 Rated R
From National Lampoon and screenwriter John Hughes (Weird Science, National Lampoon’s Vacation) comes this very funny teen horror parody set in the hallowed halls of a boarded-up high school. It's been 10 years since Lizzie Borden High School's class of '72 graduated, and everyone—the preppies, the hippies and the in-crowd—has returned to reminisce over good times past. But classmate Walter Baylor has returned too—with a vengeance. While the rest of the gang is misbehaving at its alma mater, Walter, who was a misunderstood freak then and a certified psychopath now, is still not over a prank played on him a decade ago and out to wreak havoc of a different sort. Roger Corman alumnus Michael Miller (Silent Rage, Jackson County Jail) directed the hilarious cast that includes Gerrit Graham (Used Cars), Michael Lerner (Barton Fink), Miriam Flynn (National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation), Stephen Furst (Up the Creek), Zane Buzby (Up in Smoke), Art Evans (Die Hard 2: Die Harder), Misty Rowe (TV’s When Things Were Rotten), Blackie Dammett (Doctor Detroit), Anne Ramsey (Throw Momma from the Train) with soap opera legend Jacklyn Zeman (General Hospital) and Rock-n-Roll icon Chuck Berry. National Lampoon’s Class Reunion will make you scream and shake... with laughter!
