They freed his mind… she captured his heart! From the classic Daniel Keyes novel Flowers for Algernon comes this moving and unforgettable adaptation by director Ralph Nelson (Lilies of the Field) and screenwriter Stirling Silliphant (In the Heat of the Night). This timeless tearjerker features an Academy Award-winning leading performance by Cliff Robertson (The Devil’s Brigade) and a rousing score by the legendary Ravi Shankar (Gandhi). When a mentally challenged man named Charly (Robertson) undergoes experimental brain surgery, he is miraculously freed from the prison of his own mind. As his IQ soars to genius proportions, Charly's eyes are opened to a world he's never truly seen. But when the effects of his operation inexplicably begin to fade, Charly must find a way to halt his regression... before his own mind destroys his life, his newfound romance and the man he's become. Arthur J. Ornitz (The Boys in the Band) shot this classic drama co-starring Claire Bloom (The Haunting) and Dick Van Patten (Zachariah).

The iconic comedy duo of Walter Matthau (Charley Varrick) and Jack Lemmon (Irma La Douce) team up again, but this time with Lemmon behind the camera, in his outstanding directorial debut and Matthau in his Oscar-nominated leading performance as Joseph P. Kotcher. Kotch is a kindly, if occasionally exasperating widower who has worn out his welcome with his son, daughter-in-law and grandson. Despite his many pearls of wisdom, he soon finds himself feeling useless and unwanted. But just when he seems destined for a retirement home, Kotch befriends a feisty, unwed, teenage mother-to-be (Deborah Winters, Blue Sunshine) and embarks on the unlikeliest of adventures. Richard H. Kline (Mr. Majestyk) shot this delightful comedy-drama that bridges the proverbial generation gap with laughter, irony and compassion–with a script by John Paxton (Crossfire).

The First Electric Western! Firepower meets flower power in this outrageous western about two thrill-seeking cowboys who rock the range. Starring John Rubinstein (The Car), Don Johnson (TV’s Miami Vice), Dick Van Patten (High Anxiety) and featuring legendary musicians Country Joe and the Fish and White Lightnin', this psychedelic trip through the Wild West is an utterly unique film experience. Two cowboys (Rubinstein and Johnson) set out for adventure and join up with a band of rock 'n' roll outlaws. But as the two friends are seduced by their own quick-draw ambitions, a deadly rivalry grows between them, and they must struggle to find a path to peace – before they lose more than their reputations... and kill more than their friendship. Hollywood veteran George Englund (The Ugly American) directed this one-of-a-kind cult classic.

Coming February 12th on DVD and Blu-ray!

The Group (1966) with optional English subtitles

Color 150 Minutes 1.66:1 Not Rated
The Group is an ensemble film directed by the great Sidney Lumet (Network, The Verdict, Dog Day Afternoon), based on the novel by Mary McCarthy (The Company She Keeps) and adapted for the screen by legendary screenwriter Sidney Buchman (Here Comes Mr. Jordan, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington) - about a group of eight young women–all classmates, friends, and recent graduates from a certain single-sex liberal arts college–as they face the inevitable pressures to sand the rough edges off their personalities and to surrender their independence to the men in their lives and the institutions they represent. The stellar cast includes Candice Bergen (Rich and Famous) in her film debut, Joan Hackett (Support Your Local Sheriff), Elizabeth Hartman (A Patch of Blue), Shirley Knight (The Rain People), Jessica Walter (Play Misty for Me), Joanna Pettet (Casino Royale), Kathleen Widdoes (TV’s As the World Turns), Larry Hagman (TV’s Dallas), Hal Holbrook (Magnum Force) and Richard Mulligan (Scavenger Hunt), James Congdon (4D Man). Award-winning cinematographer Boris Kaufman (On the Waterfront) lends this tale his peculiar sense of lighting with rich, captivating colors.

Includes the Theatrical Trailer and other KLSC Trailers!

I liked the cover of the Twilight Time Blu of it, with the three leads inexplicably sitting around naked in the middle of a snowstorm.

I read that as Mad Dog Time at first and chortled. That is also something I'd love to see the Siskel and Ebert review on disc as a feature. Sadly this is not Mad Dog Time.

Ebert thought differently apparently:
But gradually, through lots of bonfires and dinners and visits to archeological digs, a sort of menage a trois develops. I say menage a trois cautiously, since this one doesn't fit the textbook definition: Both of the women become the man's lovers, but they do not have a relationship with one another. There are a few things that the beach party genre is not yet quite ready for.

Summer Lovers (Randal Kleiser 1982) A film that will always be tied to my memory of Gene Siskel recommending it on the basis of it turning him on (his words!). The plot, if you can call it that, is the kind of thing basic cable shows like Compromising Situations would exploit over and over— two young pretty people on vacation meet a third pretty person, become involved, and get naked a lot. Dramatic tension and narrative interest are next to nothing, and there’s only so long I can make myself care about seeing someone else’s Greek beachfront vacation before counting down the clock. Like actual pornography, watching softcore like this is tedious in the extreme when not used for masturbatory purposes.
