Ah... truly we shall never see a Clive Barker-supervised SE Blu-ray of Nightbreed. Just license it to Blue Underground already, Jesus fucking Christ. No wonder Mr Barker calmly retired from this industry.

I'm not that big a fan of Nightbreed (I periodically get myself excited about Cronenberg's cameo, then watch the film and get disappointed all over again). While both films have their moments as with Hellraiser/The Hellbound Heart the original Barker novel Cabal is far more powerful and nuanced than the film version. But then I've always preferred Barker's shorter novels and the Books of Blood to anything else he has done, even the Weaveworlds and Imajicas.

Trog is the other film Joan Crawford made during her British horror period, following the circus rampage pic Beserk! (which itself was seemingly inspired by Circus of Fear)


And while we are all complaining, I'm miffed Warners not doing anything special for Donald Cammell's film of Demon Seed - by far the best film featuring Julie Christie getting terrorised and impregnated by a sentient house!

I agree that the six Books of Blood are superior works, but I did quite like the rather long Sacrament... if memory serves, it may have been the last worthwhile thing Barker's put out

And since we are now agreeing, I will also add to the praise for Lord of Illusions, which I often like to think of as Angel Heart meeting Wizard of Gore! (and I do actually think the non-Barker directed Candyman was a great adaptation of one of the short stories from the Books of Blood)

We have big (and extensive) news to report today regarding a film that we announced almost over a year ago in July. In collaboration with Morgan Creek Productions and Clive Barker’s Seraphim, Inc., the long-awaited NIGHTBREED: THE DIRECTOR’S CUT is scheduled for a release of October 28th and will be available in two retail versions: A 5,000 Unit Limited-Edition 3-Disc Blu-ray™ set and a Special Edition DVD & Blu-ray™ Combo.

In 1990, the film was released theatrically nationwide. However, the movie studio edited the film extensively and several scenes were excised or rearranged – much to Director Clive Barker’s disappointment. Since then, a fan-driven movement was created (http://www.OccupyMidian.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) to see the full version of the film restored and re-released. Now, after 25 years, fans and horror enthusiasts can finally experience NIGHTBREED like never before! Scream Factory, in conjunction with Warner Bros., was able to find the long-thought-missing original film elements and combed through over 600 boxes to locate not only the lost scenes but a treasure trove of never-before-seen footage as well. With nearly an hour of lost footage meticulously restored, the result is not only a more faithful adaptation of Clive Barker’s book Cabal, but also what he originally intended NIGHTBREED to be.

Official statement from Clive Barker: "This is film history and beyond my wildest dreams of realization. When Scream Factory told me that they found the NIGHTBREED film footage I was gob-smacked! This is the ultimate validation of choices made by myself and Mark Miller [of Seraphim Films] all the way back in 2008. As we embarked down the road of attempting to track down the lost footage, we looked at each other and said, 'Maybe one day they'll find it.' It's my pleasure to announce that the day has come. Speaking personally, I didn't allow myself to believe that it would. Even if we did find some footage (which we did in 2009 in the form of heavily degraded VHS tapes) and even if we did find a company willing to release the film (which we did in 2013 with Scream Factory, God bless them) the prospect of finding the actual lost film materials was remoter than I'd wanted to admit out loud. If the footage could not be found by those who had worked closest on it the same year it had been released, then what were the odds we'd be able to find anything 20 years on? But Scream Factory, in their commendable determination, kept up the search and thanks to them total reconstruction has been made a possibility. There's never been a reconstruction that's had as little chance of succeeding and yet has succeeded on as many fronts as this film has. It's unprecedented. To now have a movie that we can put together in the way that I fully intended it to be seen when I first set out to make this film in 1989 is extraordinary. The project has moved inexorably to this conclusion. Fate and the hard work of individuals such as Mark Miller, Russell Cherrington, Phil and Sarah Stokes, Occupy Midian, Morgan Creek, and ultimately, Scream Factory have made this a possibility and I could not be happier."

I'm thinking high price is because of the license of the theatrical cut from Warner, not the bonus disc. They had to add some exclusive content to make it worthwhile.

Shout has licensed a few Warner titles for the MST3K sets. Why this much for Nightbreed?

Considering how extensive the extras and how involved Barker is, I'd be interested at it around half of MSRP. Anyone paying full MSRP for this set just to get some folded up poster is a joker and I will laugh at you directly

Yeah, I think those 1,000 people can keep their poster, but I'm kinda glad of the high price. Hopefully it'll help prevent an instantaneous sell-out.
Personally I think it would've been a better choice to have cover art by Barker himself, but I think the disc content should more than make up for any misgivings over the cover. I'm very, very much looking forward to this release - fantastic news that the actual 35mm elements were found. Hope they put this much effort into their edition of Lord of Illusions.

EDIT: I guess I spoke too soon. Seems they've already sold out of the first 1000 copies and have allocated the next 1000 to their store. I'm going to be very ... something ... if I miss out on this.

They're offering it for $67. About £50 delivered to the UK, though this will likely be the best option for international buyers as DiabolikDVD are 100% customs friendly. Even if Amazon.com have it for less you'll probably pay around the same, if not more, once you factor in customs.

Okay, the Nightbreed limited edition disc is tempting because of the third disc but fifty-six bucks? What is this, a box set? Is it the poster? Because that's stupid. I'm getting the Unrated Director's Cut 2-Disc edition since that's Barker's true vision anyway.

Is the Director's Cut the same cut as the so-called Cabal cut under a different moniker or a whole new cut? I've read reviews of the Cabal cut saying it addresses many of the shortcomings of the theatrical version but needed more stringent editing to elevate the film to something great.
