StudioCanal: Melville: the Essential Collection

#1 Post by Calvin » Sat Jul 15, 2017 8:50 am

In a BFI Press Release from a few weeks ago, announcing the Southbank's upcoming season Jean-Pierre Melville: Visions of the Underworld:
STUDIOCANAL will also release of a brand-new boxset of six key films by Jean-Pierre Melville, in celebration of his centenary. Featuring several brand new 4k restorations as well as exclusive new extras, MELVILLE, THE ESSENTIAL COLLECTION will include Le Doulos, Bob Le Flambeur, Léon Morin, Prêtre, L'Armée Des Ombres and Le Cercle Rouge and will be available to own on DVD and Blu-Ray for the first time on September 12.
It's not listed, but I would bet on Un flic being the 6th film given that it's the only other Melville SC owns and those 6 films made up the old DVD box set.

Le Doulos, Bob le flambeur and Léon Morin, Prêtre have all had 4K restorations.

Really looking forward to this. Wish it was up for preorder so I could wish list it.

The French Studio Canal Melville box set will have 10 blus and 2 DVds. Not listed yet how that breaks down but will possibly add Deuxieme souffle and Silence de la mer. Quand tu liras cette lettre is coming on blu from Gaumont. Deux hommes en Mahattan already on Gaumont blu. Anybody's guess what happens with Le Samourai which is still in the morgue courtesy of Pathé

The bet so far is for Le deuxième souffle (still with René Chateau and very unlikely to be included in HD) and Les enfants terribles to be the 2 missing movies on BD.
No one knows yet if 24h dans la vie d'un clown will be included too.
New upgrades would thus be Le doulos and Un flic. The rest is already available individually on BD.

Magnet of Doom probably the least likely, no?

So a different release for the UK and France. What are the chances of SC releasing either in the US?

I wouldn't hold out much hope of Lionsgate releasing an US version of the Melville set.

After murdering an old associate in retaliation for the killing of his former girlfriend, Maurice becomes racked with suspicion and distrust of everyone around him amid rumours that Silien has become a police informant. Are there really 2 Interviews with Bernard Stora?
And if Interview with Rui Nogueira was dropped and Studio Canal re-authored the disk, it's possibly can be different transfer too.

With absolute final specs still outstanding on the 12 disc French SC set- particularly regarding subs of any description and what format Les Enfants terrible will be- and Criterion's Samourai still being the joker in the pack it's getting quite complicated to see what might be the best combo between purely individual releases and using the UK SC set as a core to supplement.
Quand tu liras cette lettre will apparently have english subs on the Gaumont blu so there's one crossed off for starters.

Oh, duh! Thanks

Also worth noting that both the discs in this set and the ones in the UK Bunuel SC set add new extras to even existing discs, so they won't be the same releases (though transfers/encodes may be)

There will be a German release too. The website says engl. subtitles but i would not count on that: http://www.arthaus.de/jean-pierre_melvi ... ry_edition" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Zwei Männer in Manhattan (1959) / Deux hommes dans Manhattan

Funny that these Sets are mixed Bags/Boxes all over Europe i.e. also with the Godard set(s) but for obvious reasons.

Update on the French set, 10 blus and 2 dvds. Les Enfants and Clown are dvd only. Extras have been upped to 9 hours but it rather looks that there will be no subs at all like the latest Godard set.

Surely StudioCanal will simply be releasing the same discs in the UK, France and Germany, as per usual practice?

There's obviously no guarantee that the films restricted to the French box will have English subtitles, but I'd have thought it was a reasonably safe bet that the six films getting UK releases will be English-friendly regardless of where you purchase them. Why create two or more masters for a single film when it's far cheaper to create one master and mass-produce the same discs for multiple territories?

Well there are 6 more films in the French box that possibly have different UK rights holders. Silence de la mer, Le Samourai for starters. Also there are way more extras slated for the French box than its UK counterpart. Furthermore Studio Canal haven't even provided HoH French subs on recent releases and there are none on the 7 film new Godard box so I don't share your optimism bit would love to be proved wrong.

Touchez pas au grisbi is also a very recent release that turned out to yield 2 different discs in France and the UK (notably, the UK disc has extras the French release doesn't).

For Melville, sure, the masters will be the same and I also guess that for Le cercle rouge and Army of shadows, since they already have UK/FR/DE discs (and I'd bet the set will simply repack these), these will be shared across the countries. But I'm not so sure anymore for the other 4.
