Yes!
Adding to what Chris said, the moment I found out this would be region-locked, the decision was made for me to go region-free for Blu. I'm more excited for this release than is probably healthy.

Pardon my ignorance, but has this been released in Japan?

It has, multiple times. No blu or English subtitles though, as far as I can tell.

Re: BD 10 Profound Desires of the Gods
So I'm guessing only some of the studios in Japan prohibit other territories releasing their films in Blu before them?

Only Toho at the moment it seems. We keep plugging away at them.
Shochiku seem okay (BFI Ozu) and Nikkatsu (MoC Imamura and Ichikawa).

Nick --
Any hope of some Ichikawa black comedies one day (like 10 Dark Women and Crowded Streetcar)?

Re: BD 10 Profound Desires of the Gods
Looking less likely really. Best bet might be Eclipse? or Second Run?
There was a period between 2005-2009 where this sort of thing might have cropped up from us on DVD, but we're putting all our eggs in the BD basket now, and that means we have to have a certain calibre of title for it to work. If things go well, we'll be able to get even riskier with our BDs, but it's early days and there's lots going on in the industry. The salad days are over.

I suspect the glorious black and white 'scope-ness of 10 Dark Women would look great on Blu. Maybe in a few years...

I can't remember - are you a fan of this one? It always struck me as too transgressive for the conservative old guy you are.Michael Kerpan wrote:A seriously weird, very fascinating (and often visually eye-popping) film. No region-free BD player for me in the immediate future -- but I am happy for the sake of everyone who does have one. ;~}
Just teasing, of course.

I would not put it at the very top of my Imamura list, but I do like it. My liking for Imamura is -- in fact -- rather out of character. ;~}sidehacker wrote:I can't remember - are you a fan of this one? For what it is worth (and for those who might care), the imminence of this release (and of the BFI Ozus) made me bite the bullet and order a Sherwood. ;~}

Re: BD 10 Profound Desires of the Gods
I ordered this and Feyder's Le grand jeu this morning, once I got Eureka's newsletter. Being the incorrigible DVD geek that I am I must admit my heart leapt when I read Beaver's review and saw that the region encoding warning came with the heading, 'Fiddlesticks.'
Thanks for making my shamefully geeky day, Nick and co.

Re: BD 10 Profound Desires of the Gods
Could someone direct me to any in-depth English-language writing - either in print or online - on this phenomenal film? The Tony Rayns essay and introduction from this release whetted my appetite for more.
I'd say more about the movie myself, but yesterday was only my first time seeing it and it was a lot to take in! (I mean that in the best way possible.)

Just received mine this afternoon. The MoC cover postcards were a very nice touch - I didn't know they existed! Thanks very much.

Yes, they sent me some too. The Le grand jeu one is gorgeous and I really like La planete sauvage too. They make nice little decorations in the rather dull room where I keep my computer.Bleddyn Williams wrote:The MoC cover postcards were a very nice touch...
