As far as I can make out, the DVDs are divided as follows:

Region 0 NTSC
Abhijan
Fantastic Planet
Grey Gardens
Salesman

Region 0 PAL
Buster Keaton - The Complete Short Films
Faust
Michael
The Savage Innocents
Shoeshine
Toni

Region 2 NTSC
Assassination - DVD Times says Region 0 PAL
Funeral Parade of Roses
The Idiot
Kwaidan
Naruse Volume 1 (Repast, Sound of the Mountain, Flowing)
Nightmare Alley
Scandal
Sunrise
Twenty-Four Eyes - DVD Times says Region 2 PAL

Region 2 PAL
Asphalt
The Face of Another
F For Fake
Francesco giullare di Dio
The Holy Mountain
Humanity and Paper Balloons
Kuroneko
Metropolis
The Naked Island
Onibaba
Pitfall - DVD Times says Region 2 NTSC
The Prisoner of Shark Island
Punishment Park - DVD Times says Region 0 PAL
Spione
Tartuffe
Vengeance is Mine

I'd be amazed if that was 100% accurate, so corrections are most welcome. And there are one or two omissions - Shoah, for starters - so feel free to add those too.

UPDATE: I've checked these against both the DVD Times and DVD Beaver reviews. In most cases they match, but I've noted disagreements - and have given the benefit of the doubt to DVD Beaver unless anyone claims otherwise.

On a PC or Mac, yes. On a normal domestic player, probably not. You need to check whether both your player and your television are compatible with the PAL video system.

Generally, region 1 players will only decode NTSC but this site might help you hack your region 1 player and go multi-region. There's a one-off subscription fee of 10 quid.

NB: I own a region-free player and have not used this service personally, but I have heard good reports.

You should really be wondering which MOC dvds are NTSC more so than region 1. As the above site should attest to, every DVD Player I've ever come across can have there region cracked by their remotes.

But really, just get a Cyberhome DVD Player from Best Buy, will you. For less than the price of two MOC Dvds, you won't have to ask this question again.

I heard the Un Femme Mariee, or at least its Blu, is NCTS. Is that true?

NTSC (480p, 24fps) and PAL (576i, 25fps) aren't applicable to Blu. All Blu-rays are 1080p, 24fps.

That's real nice. So that means with an American Blu player I can pick up any all region MOC blu?

The only possible hitch is that some region free Blu-rays released outside the U.S. may have some of the extras in PAL. I don't know if this issue even applies to any MoCs though.

Just to be totally clear, a lot of BDs have extra materials that are still SD, and that material can be NTSC (480i/480p) or PAL (576i or 576p).

MoC have not released any BDs with PAL (576i/576p) extras. The MoC BD of UNE FEMME MARIEE is entirely 1080p (film + trailer).

I guess I'm going broke in June, or when ever I can these things cheap. The extras thing is good to remember though. Probably only getting BFIs and MOCs.

I believe the BFI have ported PAL SD extras to their BDs where they have SD extras and haven't strove to make these NTSC (480p) SD extras.

Actually, I think all BFI BDs to date have been 1080p throughout - SD material is either upscaled or included on a supplementary DVD (Salo, the Bill Douglas Trilogy, Jeff Keen, etc.), though I think the vast majority of material on the Blu-ray discs themselves is native HD.

Put it like this: I'm not aware of a BFI BD that isn't completely playable on any machine worldwide, aside from region-coding issues with some titles.

Sorry - I was thinking of the BFI BDs that come with PAL DVDs as part of the package (Jeff Keen, Bill Douglas, Kenneth Anger, Nighthawks, etc) - much less of a problem than PAL material that exists on a BD itself. I apologise.

It's Artificial Eye that put SD PAL material on their BDs!

You can add the upcoming Metropolis to the Region B list- I emailed Kalat, and he said "Their Blu-Ray will be encoded as Region B, as well—so one would need a specially configured Blu-Ray player to enjoy that release. (And so, while I’ve otherwise been happy watching Blu-Rays on my son’s PS3, I’m now shopping for an all-region Blu-Ray deck. Oh well.)"

I broke down and got the Sherwood 5004 -- so I could be prepared for the upcoming Region B-only imamura (MOC) and Ozu (BFI) releases. Got my first true Region B today (Belle du Jour) -- and this worked like a charm.
