MoC will be releasing METROPOLIS on Blu-ray as soon as Murnau-Stiftung have completed the HD telecine and it's been restored.

It's not even been started yet, so don't hold your breath.

Excellent.

So the film will be restored again? and then the HD telecine made?

This is all being discussed and worked out this week. There has been another 'scholarly' edition of METROPOLIS prepared in the last couple of years -- which I have not seen. Not sure if that will have any bearing on things.

My guess is that they'll take the restored IP from the earlier film restoration, do a new HD telecine, and spend a year restoring that in HD.

Sounds great.

Any chance the upcoming Nibelungen is expected to sell enough to release simultaneously in Blu-ray?

THEY FOUND THE MISSING SCENES!!!!!

#32 Post by Tommaso » Wed Jul 02, 2008 7:17 am

I guess the proposed new restoration/telecine will be much greater than you all think, because:

THEY FOUND THE MISSING SCENES!!!!!

It's all on the FWMS-site.

The missing scenes were found in a 16mm-print in a private collection in Buenos Aires. FWMS believes that this enables them to restore the film almost to its original length.

I'm completely floored and overjoyed of course.

I was wondering with Kino announcing they’ll be releasing Metropolis with the lost footage if MoC will be doing the same?

Of course! --- Everyone's reliant on FWMS doing a great job though, so it will take time, but be worth it.

So, so glad to hear this, wonderful news. I look forward to it, however long it takes.

Any news of when the new uncut print of Metropolis will be released on BD or DVD?

Nick mentioned in the Eureka theatrical thread that the film will play in UK cinemas some time between August and October so hopefully the BD/DVD will arrive before Christmas.

Jonathan Rosenbaum said on his Facebook that he is doing a joint commentary with David Kalat on the almost-complete Metropolis for Masters of Cinema.

Is MoC going to release "Metropolis" BD only?

I'm fairly certain they've said Metropolis will come out on both formats, though exceptions like this will be rare.

I'm really on the verge of buying a blu-ray player and get it over with anyway.

How difficult would it be to include the '27 Paramount U.S. cut as an extra? There's brief clips in "The Metropolis Case" from a decent print. I think it would be neat to see the most bastardized cut alongside the nearly complete cut.

It sounds like a complete waste of space on the disk to be frank.

It would actually be nice if there was a "study edition" of the film available, featuring all released cuts and variant versions (including the "Morodorized" version). Most people just want to see the most complete cut in the best version possible, but scholars and academic libraries would benefit from the availability of several versions.

There is--or was--a study edition available, although it did not meet your criteria of including other editions. It was released in 2005 by the Universität der Künste in Berlin and was sold only to academics and institutions--it was never released commercially. It presented the film with a piano version of the Huppertz score. Where the footage was missing, the screen was blank, but viewers were provided with documentation and, if available, stills documenting the missing footage. It also included a PDF file of the only surviving copy of the screenplay, from the Huppertz estate. The whole thing was extremely well done, but was one of a kind. In anticipating the needs of scholars, the releases of Edition Film-Museum come closest to this ideal.
