Tokyo Tribe definitely in the MoC lineup as confirmed by Eureka on their Facebook page just now:
At Cannes this year we acquired TOKYO TRIBE, for the Masters of Cinema Series, where director Sion Sono tackles hip-hop and gangs. Here Jason Gray visits the set for Screen Daily http://bit.ly/1tBh3oa" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Forthcoming: Tokyo Tribe
Watched the movie yesterday, and it was utterly insane. I didn't think Sono could pull off a hip hop musical, but he did it. It reminded me of Takashi Miike movies with cartoonish violence and balls out insanity, plus a bit of Alfonso Cuaron with the extreme long takes, and Ryuhei Kitamura with the fight choreography, and also Akira Kurosawa's "Dodes Kaden" with the colorful set designs. It definitely fed to my love of hip hop, gangster films, and martial arts movies.
The original comics couldn't convey the music obviously but the animated series did, but the movie goes even further, by gathering much of Tokyo's great underground hip hop stars and movie stars together for some great rap battles. Plus, the song lyrics were printed on screen which made it very easy to follow along and if you wanted to, sing along. (or should I say rap along)

That's unfortunate. If anything, it would've meant some of the first English-language writing on Sono's work included with a home video release; in the inevitable booklet.
Ah well, still looking forward to seeing it.

Guess I've just been unlucky in that regard.

I wonder what's behind the decision? I hope it's more 'we've got too much on our plate' than 'on second thoughts, this isn't too hot'. Just the idea of another Sono getting a good English-friendly release is more than enough to make me happy, so I'm not too worried about it in that regard, Sono's pre-SUICIDE CLUB work is still languishing without any kind of English-friendly releases and without the very keen interest of a specialist label like MOC, is likely to remain that way.

Re: Eureka: Tokyo Tribe
Sion Sono would be a far worthier director in the MoC series than the maker of Simon Killer. But I agree I'm glad Tokyo Tribe is being released at all in an English-friendly version. The other possibility is of course that Eureka got it wrong in their tweet and Tokyo Tribe was intended for Eureka's own series all along.

It's a drop in the bucket given the length of his filmography, but the Japanese DVD of The Room was transferred from a English-subbed print, or at least the old standalone release was. It was reissued in the recent Early Years: Before Suicide box, but I don't know if that version is still subtitled, and in any case I'm pretty sure nothing else in the set is.kidc85 wrote:Just the idea of another Sono getting a good English-friendly release is more than enough to make me happy, so I'm not too worried about it in that regard, Sono's pre-SUICIDE CLUB work is still languishing without any kind of English-friendly releases and without the very keen interest of a specialist label like MOC, is likely to remain that way.

Ugh, I really forgot that was an MoC until this post. What a fucking turd of a movie. Sion Sono is at least consistently fun and when he's on his A-game, he's fantastic. Why Don't You Play In Hell? is both surprisingly heartwarming and pure zaniness. From what I understand, this was on the same tinge. What a shame!Finch wrote:Sion Sono would be a far worthier director in the MoC series than the maker of Simon Killer.

Maybe "[no] English-friendly releases" was a bit hyperbolic, I more meant no R1/2 releases. Surprisingly, there are multiple English-subbed versions of his pre-SC films on YouTube, of which I've seen THE ROOM and KEIKO DESU KEDO.The Fanciful Norwegian wrote:It's a drop in the bucket given the length of his filmography, but the Japanese DVD of The Room was transferred from a English-subbed print, or at least the old standalone release was. THE ROOM is a highly odd film, aggressively stylised but in a manner completely opposite to his later tendencies. ROOM is incredibly, incredibly still (most of the actual 'movement' is done by the subway trains the characters ride immobile on, and the camera never even bothers to shift its gaze if the characters walk out of shot) and incredibly, incredibly quiet (all the dialogue is whispered). Although good, this kind of hypnotism and invoked hyper-awareness of time and space is even more successfully explored in KEIKO DESU KEDO. Keiko is a woman reaching her 22nd birthday and becomes obsessed with the idea of the passing of time; the film is her record of how time passes, which she explores through playing games which emphasize and distort the way in which we observe time. A playful yet somber meditation on mortality, I don't think I've seen anything quite like it.
