What’s weird is that I’m pretty sure the same artist drew Sullivan’s Travels, which had a great cover

Marriage Story is the original poster art. So I'd put that on Baumbach

They also drew the cover for The Palm Beach Story, which might explain why Henry Fonda looks like Joel McCrea.

That Marriage Story cover was what was used for the screener.

I like the Taste of Cherry cover, the original was iconic, but the tree is barely seen in the film itself; since a huge swath of the film is closeups of the suicidal man-in-car, sfocusing instead on the main character makes more sense to me.

Lady Eve is... interesting.

War of the Worlds is great.

Taste of Cherry is a lovely cover but not the right fit for that film at all. Not that it’ll stop me buying it - you could put Taste of Cherry in a brown bag and I’d buy it so long as the transfer was good.

just hit me that Taste of Cherry is really similar to the Identification of a Woman cover. Maybe there’s a deleted scene where Badii gets stuck on the same foggy highway.

Well, that one was the worst Criterion old comedie cartoon cover til You Know What last year, so I guess this one is on brand and Sullivan’s Travels was the aberration

Maybe they should hire an artist who know how to capture an actor's likeness instead of someone whose knack is drawing porn. Just a thought.

To be honest, I hated the Sullivan's Travels cover too, and it's now clear that this artist just gives all his women the same face.

What exactly is wrong with the Marriage Story cover? It is in line with the ironic title and a good (albeit basic) piece of graphic design and it is also one of the original posters.

They should have gone with different typography (a serif in title case and more opaque) for The Taste of Cherry but it is a fine cover.

I literally said Jesus Christ aloud when I saw the Lady Eve cover. I'm seriously put off upgrading the film in spite of the 4k resto. Why do Criterion think they have to use these ghastly cartoon covers for classic Hollywood films? Just when you think they turned a corner with the Holiday cover..

My god. The upgrade covers.... what happened? Cover art was going pretty strong this year so far with both new releases and upgrades but I guess July had to be the sour apple

I couldn't remember what the originals looked like, so just for reference...

That Lady Eve cover is sooooo non-PC. Stanwyck needs to follow the CDCs rules for social distancing. I think this cover will send the public the wrong message.

Also, a snake in a top-hat is totes cultural appropriation.

The Lady Eve upgrade cover might as well have a Gene Shalit caricature banner on it. It couldn't make it any worse.

Anyone have an HD scan of that? I think I found my reversible cover.

No matter how many times I look at that cover, I still can't convince myself that Stanwyck doesn't have a mustache.

Shalit looks like he waiting to catch whatever falls out of Stanwyck's dress there in that middle pic.

It suddenly occurs to me that Gangs of New York might've been improved had Shalit been cast as Bill The Butcher.
