Fox World Cinema

Fox World Cinema
(US) 20th Century Fox presents Fox World Cinema - A premier line of extraordinary and diverse films from around the globe. Celebrating universal entertainment that will thrill, charm, and inspire all of us, these highly acclaimed selections belong in every movie lover's collection.
as they say.

So far, they have a few repackages with a "World Cinema" slipcover (Slumdog Millionaire, Night Watch, Day Watch, My Name Is Khan, Under The Same Moon) and also 3 new titles (Angel Of Evil, Dum Maaro Dum, and The Butcher The Thief And The Swordsman)

I can only find a review for 1 title so far:
Dum Maaro Dum review

Although Fox seems to believe they want to sell these to every movie lover's collection, for some reason they are all on DVD only(!). Although Slumdog, Night/Day Watch are available on BD without the slipcase, Angel Of Evil is out on BD in Europe from Fox, etc, I guess no plans for this collection for HD...

So far not much else in details, as if this is going to be contemporary films only, or if it will include classic films (like the MGM library).

Talking of Day Watch, has anyone released it with the animated subtitles? Much though I enjoyed it in the cinema (I preferred it to Night Watch), the subtitles were a major part of the appeal, which is why I didn't buy the DVD after reports that it only had the plain electronic variety.

Angels of Evil has also just been released in the UK on DVD and Blu by Artificial Eye, with interviews and deleted scenes which it looks as if the Fox release will not include. (It is actually a film produced by Fox International Italy, which might explain its release by Fox in the US)

EDIT: The Butcher, The Chef and The Swordsman is a co-production with 'Fox International Productions' and Dum Maaro Dum is a co-production with Fox Star Studios, so this looks more likely to be a line geared towards new and recent international Fox productions getting released through a specialist label rather than being a label devoted to 'bought in' world cinema.

There aren't any releases of "Day Watch" with animated subtitles on disc. I also believe the animated subtitles on "Night Watch" is only on DVD, none of the Blu-rays have them.

Also, the director's cut (or original Russian cut) has only been released on DVD in Russia, Germany, and Japan, with German and Japanese discs having English subtitles. The German, having both cuts on 2 discs, while the Japanese has the 2 cuts on 2 different DVD releases, but only the US and UK DVDs have animated subs.

That's my impression too - which is a real shame, as they were a definite advance on the ones for Night Watch, with some really spectacular effects: for instance, a butcher hurling a slab of bloody meat, which briefly forms the word 'Bitch!' in blood before trickling down the walls.
