Re: Twin Peaks
It isn't as though Dougie/Coop has no agency at all. When he was threatened by Ike he stood his ground ably enough, suggesting at the very least he has an instinct for threats. Granted, Janey-E's full frontal attack was possibly more nuanced than Ike's, but we also have to consider she was wearing red shoes.

Just as unsurprising are the number of people queuing up with long explanations as to why the question of consent is somehow immaterial because "it's fiction" and "they're married."
I personally found the way Maclachlan played the scene with that goofy grin and the exaggerated arm-flapping funny at first, but the gestalt of the sequence (like much of the rest of this episode) felt profoundly sad.

It's aburd because it's incorrect. Apparently no one has been paying much attention to what abilities Coop actually retains in this state. If this was any sort of threat even if subtle he would have picked up on it either way.oh yeah wrote: What is so inherently absurd about this? It was a misjudged, gross scene. We have no reason to believe he could consent. Again, I must say: imagine the reaction if the genders were reversed.
Tired of this particular double-standard and this is all I will be saying on the matter

Re: Twin Peaks
Honestly, while Part 10 was difficult to watch and digest, I've come to appreciate most of it a lot more now as it's churned in my head for a day. In particular, I really love that crazy scene where Cole opens his hotel room door, ostensibly to Albert... I think that's got to be one of the most beautiful and disturbing things Lynch has done in recent years! It's got that slightly "off" or uncanny quality to it which only makes it all the more eerie and affecting. At first I was so caught off guard by that "off"-ness that I didn't know what to think but now I can't get that scene out of my mind.
Some clues here in an odd piece about Bernie dancing to some Peaks music: "But if you've read this site for long, one thing you know is that Herman somehow managed to pick two massive Twin Peaks and David Lynch fans to write here."jindianajonz wrote:Herman Cain is bizarrely posting Twin Peaks screenshots to unrelated articles on his website.

Those are terrific. Even the poster for Part 8 stands out against the rest as the best of the bunch so far.

Re: Twin Peaks
Part 11 was so great that I'm sort of at a loss for where to begin. I was wondering when we'd finally see all these plot threads converge, and when we'd get our first glimpses at a more consistent Twin Peaks tone, and then this episode comes along and is just a non-stop entertainment. Even LQ, who has been a skeptical and lukewarm (at times) viewing companion for almost this entire season, was on the edge of her seat regularly remarking how great each scene was.
I've heard that some people were moved to tears during the final sequence with Dougie, and while I wasn't quite there, I can certainly imagine how the unique energy created by that hour coupled with the deeply felt combination of unease and nostalgia could take someone there.

Re: Twin Peaks
It was lovely and I think of all the episodes so far had maybe the most deftly balanced ratio of Frost's and Lynch's respective sensibilities. I'm not sure where to start either so I'll just start with the beginning, which is staged as a very classically Lynchian interruption of a little quotidian idyll. I loved the way the camera floated around in that scene with the baseball moving back and forth between the kids. Then if I'm not misremembering there's the quick cut to the Becky/Steven psychodrama, which is also beautifully executed. I won't rehearse the whole thing but some of my favorite moments were the traffic jam scene (shades of Weekend?), the dynamic between the Mitchum brothers (of course Lynch has his "villains" discuss their desire to brutally murder someone over bowls of Raisin Bran), the hilarious cutting in the "zone" scene between Cole's mystical vision and Diane's vantage on him flapping his arms around at nothing, the "Viva Las Vegas" interlude, etc -- so many wonderful moments.mfunk9786 wrote:Part 11 was so great that I'm sort of at a loss for where to begin. Regarding that last sequence I mentioned in particular, hats off to Lynch/the DPs for setting parts of the narrative in two of the most over-photographed cities in TV/movie history, Las Vegas and New York, and making them look genuinely ~new~ and beautiful.

The extended period of time we've spent with Dougie Jones and his echolalia...
My favorite scene from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me is the traffic jam where the one-armed man confronts Leland and Laura, but Lynch topped that one with the traffic jam scene from last night's "Part 11" which occurs (I believe) at the exact same intersection:

...was worth it for his first clearly enunciated non-prompted word: "Damn" in the exclamation "Damn good pie". This was both hilarious and emotionally-affecting at the same time. Equally great was the earlier haunting moment where Dougie touches his own face and repeats the word "dead".

The scene was already amazing as Bobby Briggs tries to restore calm after the remorseless child shoots a hole in the RR diner window, but the very ill young women rising out of the darkness in the passenger seat ratcheted up the scene to extraordinary!

Re: Twin Peaks
The FWWM traffic incident actually took place at the same place that the hit and run with Richard did earlier this season (a seemingly lodge connected place) , and I'm fairly certain that wasn't near the Double R.
Regarding Dougie, this episode has fully convinced me that if and when Cooper does return to normal, there is no reason for him to go back to Twin Peaks to stay or return the FBI. There's nothing left for him in either place, as TP rots and his name is tarnished as fugitive. Meanwhile Dougie's life is more idyllic every week. Everything the Lodge stole from him in the last 25 years is already his as Dougie

I read a rumor that Sherilyn Fenn only filmed very briefly with Lynch for this season, and there is a lot of speculation that she's disfigured from the bomb or ruined her life to produce a kid like Richard. Cooper going back to find his old love wasted away would be the final reason to accept how things have changed and leave the town. That and Truman's inevitable funeral

Re: Twin Peaks
I've heard the same re: Fenn, and that she's extremely unhappy about it after campaigning to have the show return. I'm particularly interested to see if we have more Sheryl Lee, as what we saw of her in the Black Lodge was absolutely breathtaking and frightening and wonderful.

Re: Twin Peaks
This is now what I've been suspecting since the last couple of eps. I initially read when the cast list was officially being announced at least for returning cast that Fenn was to have "a major presence" but I realize now that doesn't exactly equate to having a lot of scenes. Anyways I wonder what confusion if any was going on here. Lynch was extremely secretive towards most of the cast so maybe Lynch was vague in such a way that Fenn thought she would be shooting more scenes.MongooseCmr wrote:SpoilerShowI read a rumor that Sherilyn Fenn only filmed very briefly with Lynch for this season, and there is a lot of speculation that she's disfigured from the bomb or ruined her life to produce a kid like Richard. Also this explains her twitter tirade against Frost and Lynch last year where she put them on blast for treating the women of Twin Peaks as unimportant and something about unfair wages and MacLachlan being the only cast member treated like a star. I really hate to say this but maybe it is just bitterness on her end for expecting more work and recognition by returning to the show.
And I don't know if Lynch is the type to cut her role down (if she shot more stuff than we think) during post production if he was aware of what she was saying about him and Frost in the public eye.
in any case MongooseCmr may I ask where you heard your rumor?

Re: Twin Peaks
You are correct. I did a bit of Google Map sleuthing (which I love to do) and the FWWM traffic incident was filmed at the intersection of Meadowbrook Way SE and Park St. SE in Snoqualmie, WA while the intersection where the RR Diner (actually Twede's Cafe) is located is three miles away in North Bend, WA (Bendigo Blvd S. and N. North Bend Way).MongooseCmr wrote:The FWWM traffic incident actually took place at the same place that the hit and run with Richard did earlier this season (a seemingly lodge connected place) , and I'm fairly certain that wasn't near the Double R...

Not a fan of the pop music/performances in general. Agreed
That the MOR Viva Las Vegas cover was particularly tepid. Doesn't take away how brilliant this show is otherwise.

Meh I thought that was a nice bit of kitsch set to some gorgeous visuals and was used to heighten the overall plastic feeling of unreality Las Vegas has.whaleallright wrote:Y'all have to admit that the Shawn Colvin music cue was pretty tone-deaf, though.
I also don't love a lot of the bands, though I like Van Etten fine and admit I grew up on Chromatics and Au Revoir Simone. Too much kinda anodyne white indie synth pop (tbh I'd rather listen to Colvin than some of it), but then it is a small northwestern town that seems to have only minimally entered the 21st century. I do like the conceit of ending the majority of the episodes with musical numbers; it's like a nice soft landing after 50-odd mins of the utterly unpredictable.
Also I make an exception for Rebekah del Rio. She was great, auto tune and poor lip syncing and all.

Her dress was a nice touch, and probably my favorite of all the performances so far. What was the name of the band who played during Richard Horne's first scene? I liked them too.

I believe that was Trouble, a band David Lynch's son Riley is in incidentally. Riley appears again in the episode that ends in the RR diner; he plays the person who runs into the restaurant asking around for someone whose name I'm forgetting.

I noticed it too. It seemed to upset a lot of people, and it's true that del Rio certainly doesn't need it to hold a tune (there's an unmanipulated recording of the song floating around if you're interested), but -- and maybe I'm showing my age here -- as someone who came up listening to autotune insinuate itself into the production toolkit of nearly every genre, I didn't mind it at all. Plus I think there's some merit to the speculation that Lynch, who handled the sound design for the entire return, manipulated the original as a nod to the series's motifs of electricity and the growing power of the lodges over the town.

Dougie-Cooper seemed to experience yet another of his frequent micro-epiphanies this episode, in reaction to the Badalamenti music from the restaurant piano. But had Agent Cooper ever "heard" Badalamenti in the original series or Fire Walk With Me?
