Totally justified. If you discover you love him down the line and don't have this, you're screwed!Orlac wrote:I'm still wondering why I went for Rivette, when I never heard of him before, and didn't even like the sound of the films. I think I have a problem!

Has Arrow put this up for sale for the US yet? I see it on Amazon, but not on their site.

I assume you mean you can't see the Region A edition listed on their UK site?
Arrow's US site is yet to go live, so you're only option currently is with 3rd party sellers for their US titles.

Re: Battles Without Honor and Humanity
This is being released in both the UK and the US, limited to 2000 in the UK and 3000 in the US. I think many of us US buyers do not want to buy the UK release (even though it is identical to the US release) lest we take away an opportunity for a UK buyer. At current exchange rates, I believe it will be much more expensive for a UK buyer to import the US set than a US buyer to import the UK set.
But yes, if you know of a way to pre-order the US release, please post in this thread!

Well, I want to be nice, but I also don't want to pay $50 more than I have to for this.

Late announcement, but the first film will include an audio commentary by Stuart Galbraith IV, who also recently gave an excellent one on the BFI "Rashomon".

Re: Battles Without Honor and Humanity
Order from Arrow direct and you'll almost always get it earlier.
(I say 'almost' because I actually received My Darling Clementine on the release date...and even then, my copy was damaged so I had to return it)

I am aware of that, but usually but usually they ship one week before street date, so this was a nice surprise!

The box I just got from Arrow says Region B. Did I get sent the wrong set?

Arrow aren't allowed to sell US versions from their store. Yours also spells the title of the set as Honour rather than Honor, no?
It should still work regardless as the discs are identical.

Yeah, I have the U.K. spelling. But I wanted region-free or region A. Crap.

The discs are Region A+B (BD) and 1/2 (actually 1/2/7/8) for DVD.

Ah, okay, I probably knew that before and forgot. Sorry for any confusion. Thanks for clarifying.

Did they print B only on the back of the box?

Re: Battles Without Honor and Humanity
Yeah, the box, individual cases and discs all state B only. That's not SOP as Black Cats has AB.

Re: Battles Without Honor and Humanity
I imagine it's probably some oversight caused by there being the two different spellings of the name. All the dual-territory stuff I've got from Arrow very clearly has A/B designated everywhere including on the discs itself even going back to Obsession (which is ABC).

There was only enough ink for the 'U' so the 'A' had to go?

Re: Battles Without Honor and Humanity
Did a pre-order through Arrow UK and started watching today. I saw the first two parts on VHS Home Vision back in the day and, expecting something closer to The Godfather than to Sam Fuller pulp (something I would come to appreciate only later) I was disappointed and never watched the last two films. Yet, what I had seen still stuck with me, even though I’d found it impossible, for the most part, to keep track of who was who and which gangs they belonged to. So – blu-ray often making a real difference, and Arrow’s work of late being excellent, I decided to take a flyer on the new release. And after watching the first film, I am finding that a) I still can’t figure out in any detail who’s who or which gangs they belong to, but b) I'm not overly concerned about it, and c) I’m enjoying the film immensely, and d) Fukasaku is a much more interesting director than I ever could have realized way back when - he really knows how to pack the frame, use telephoto to great effect, and when he wants to give you a beautiful shot he's more than capable. However - something else that had stuck in my mind from the Home Vision viewing: an annoying sort of buzz on the soundtrack, intermittent but consistent. (Possibly what an email respondent from Criterion called "motorboating", which occurred on the Criterion Andrei Rublev.) I certainly hadn’t expected to encounter it once again, in a different format, and with technology that you would think could deal with it now advanced some 20 or so years behind VHS. It begins about 10 - 15 minutes into the film and then goes off and on until the end - it's most audible in sequences where characters are not being beaten, shot, and stabbed (50%, maybe , of the film).
It would be nice if Arrow would provide some sort of comment on this audio problem. It may be that I’ll just have to learn to live with it (as will all of you). Everything else about their release is a bang-up job and I look forward to watching the other three discs, as well as the 224 minute version .
