Animal Factory
Troubled youth Ron Decker (Edward Furlong, American History X) is sentenced to a ten-year stint in the notorious San Quentin State Prison for a drug-dealing conviction. Inexperienced in the ways of prison life, he’s taken under the wing of Earl Copen (Willem Dafoe, To Live and Die in LA), an experienced con with the entire prison in the palm of his hand – inmates and guards alike. But as Ron grows increasingly cocky in his privileged role as Earl’s confidant, is he in danger of biting off more than he can chew with some of the jail’s more volatile inhabitants?
Based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Eddie Bunker (Reservoir Dogs), Animal Factory was Steve Buscemi (Lonesome Jim, Interview)’s second stint in the director’s chair and sees him marshaling a formidable ensemble cast, including Bunker, Danny Trejo (Machete) and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler), for a powerful and sincere account of the men caught up in the penal system and the deals they cut with each other, and themselves, in order to survive.

I remember Trees Lounge, didn't know he'd directed anything else.

This'll be the other Willem Defoe film that we had hinted.

Re: Animal Factory
It got a very limited release for the time considering the director and cast. The script suffers from one of the pitfalls of novel adaptations -- trying to squeeze too much into its running time -- characters and subplots are introduced and then dropped and so on (saw it during its initial run, so don't remember it that well). But it's worth a watch. Glad it's getting the good boutique label treatment -- it felt like one of those movies that after a brief run dropped off the face of the earth.
Didn't know he's directed two films since then -- though of course I noticed his credits on many TV shows.

If this is still with Sony/Columbia then that is big news in itself.
Never seen this one but I enjoyed Straight Time and welcome anything else to do with Bunker.

I just looked it up and everywhere points to Franchise Pictures producing it. Previously released in the UK by Optimum (now StudioCanal). Can't see Sony mentioned anywhere...Cronenfly wrote:If this is still with Sony/Columbia then that is big news in itself.

Re: Animal Factory
Franchise probably would have meant WB distribution at the time, but Franchise have gone bankrupt since so God knows where the rights are now.

Re: Animal Factory
Nice to see this getting a release - I'd love to see Trees Lounge getting the Arrow treatment as well.
