IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
(Jamil Dehlavi, 1992)
Release date: 18 March 2019
Limited Blu-ray Edition (World Blu-ray premiere)

Pre-order here

A Western couple (played by Melissa Leo and James Wilby) working in Pakistan visit an unconventional holy shrine to harness its spiritual powers to help them conceive a child. They are lavished with the attentions of the shrine’s leader (an exceptional performance from Zia Mohyeddin – Lawrence of Arabia, Khartoum) and her followers, but their methods and motives are not all that they seem, and the couple’s lives are plunged into darkness.

This ravishing, unsettling film from director Jamil Delhavi (The Blood of Hussain, Born of Fire) is a deeply personal work which raises questions of cultural and sexual identity, religious fanaticism and the abuses of power. The brand-new 2K restoration from the original negative was supervised and approved by Dehavi and cinematographer Nic Knowland.

Great news that they’re doing two of their own restorations. This is good progress, I wish them luck with it - and will definitely be supporting.

I'm assuming someone high up at Indicator is a big Dehlavi fan and is prioritizing these films and if necessary restorations that no one else would fund

Don't forget the two films BFI has released and one by Eureka--the whole UK has gone mad for him!

Yes I need to pick up Blood of Hussein / Towers of Silence. After I’ve watched my copy of Born of Fire.

Mondo Digital:
Funded by Channel 4, this film has been very rarely seen outside of its U.K. VHS and 2010 DVD releases and should be quite a discovery for many thanks to its 2019 Indicator Blu-ray release. The new 2K presentation from the original camera negative is a real beauty with a dark, rich atmosphere full of saturated earth tones.
