Competition and Premiere slates announced for next month's Sundance festival

There's a strange comment on one of those Deadline articles decrying it for getting too mainstream/too big but I'm rather astonished at the lack of major auteurs- I figured Baumbach's next (whatever it ends up being called) would be a lock, for one.

The Discovery doesn't strike you as an almost exact copy of Wristcutters? I mean, you can only tell so much from a capsule description for a film festival, but my first thought was "oh, I've seen that movie."

But Wristcutters doesn't share the premise, I think-- my understanding of the description is an afterlife is proven, everyone kills themselves to get there, and two of those who are left (don't kill themselves) have a romance. If you're right though then yes, far too similar

I've a bit of an obsession with the festival since I've fond memories of more or less discovering contemporary cinema (films apparently existed outside Antonioni et. al) via the Cannes section in the July/Aug. 2005 edition of Film Comment in an Oklahoma City newsstand when I was in high school. So I apologize in advance if this thread is full of my logorrheic speculation.

To start with, Lucrecia Martel's Zama is ineligible to play in Competition as jury head Almodóvar produced the film. Thierry Frémaux would have happily slotted it in Competition otherwise (you'd like to think; he did, after all, relegate Weerasethakul's Palme follow-up Cemetery of Splendor to Un Certain Regard) and it would have been an early frontrunner for the Palme, Martel a candidate for the second female to win the Palme, a solid Latin American entry and, for Almodóvar, more attention and potential awards for the film he helped produced. But alas. The good news is that the film will still exist.

There's a certain hope this year's jury won't go completely rogue, but I guess they're inherently rogue. I'm not certain George Miller opting for topicality with Loach last year will be vindicated like, say, Cronenberg's insistence on Rosetta in 1999, but a Cannes jury will be a Cannes jury---unpredictable, ultimately, and full of compromises that land like shrugs.

A cursory look at all the candidates reveals that we'll probably see a lot of Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning, and Colin Farrell this year.

All - much like with the Awards thread, I don't see any reason why we can't discuss any and all festival stuff (even Cannes, much like we don't have a separate Oscars thread outside of the Awards Season one) under one roof. Would you mind posting anything further regarding Cannes (or any other festival in 2017) in here going forward?

I'm actually a lot more interested in the films outside of the main competition. Wonderstruck is an exception, I've been looking forward to that for a while now.

I, for one, was continually amused by the amount of people making threads for Cannes only to have it moved before anyone seemed to think it might be a thing

(My concern with such a decision is once we reach the triumvirate of Fall festivals of Telluride/Toronto/NYFF the line between Festival Circuit and Awards Season becomes incredibly hazy)

The thing with other festivals (fall and otherwise, look at the amount of Sundance content in here considering how big of a fest that is) is that they don't generate a ton of content here, and certainly not so much that it can't all go under one umbrella. Not to beat a dead horse with the Awards thread comparison, but the Oscars generate easily the most discussion, there are several other awards given to film and television throughout the year, and we manage to coherently discuss and share nearly all of them under one umbrella. So why not festivals?

Maybe they've changed it this year, but traditionally the UCR opener is still awards-eligible. Party Girl won a prize for its cast in 2014 and Cannes consistently counts the opener as one of the competition films (for example, last year they counted 18 films in competition instead of 17, in 2015 they counted 19 instead of 18, etc.).

Since it might've been unclear, I'm talking about Barbara and the Un Certain Regard competition, not Ismael's Ghosts and the main competition. The English press release has an "Out of comp." note alongside Ismael's Ghosts, but not for Barbara. Ditto the French version.
