I imagine this is far less shocking across the pond. I still remember flipping on the television one evening in London, and doing my best Danny Thomas impression when I was greeted with the image of a penis inside a miraculously well-lit vagina from the perspective of a camera affixed to the cervix.

I'm far more outraged by his choice to give her one of those hideous mid-80s short haircuts. I didn't even recognize this was the same actress who fulfilled the titular duties of his Jeune & Jolie

Ha, her getting said haircut is also one of the first scenes in the film!

What's the difference between Les temoins (Téchiné) and the Campillo's film???
The previous Camp-illo's Eastern Boys was nothing extraordinary.

I like the 'hideous' hair cut. It's very boyish.

and please, not Pattinson for best actor. I hate him so much: ugly, disgusting and not good actor.

Which turns into an open eye through what has been described as an extremely campy and gratuitous effect. Both adjectives have also been used to describe the whole movie, though.

You may have to set your computer clock to Cannes time, but here's a stream of the closing ceremony.

Spotted so far: Fatih Akin and Diane Kruger. So a prize for In the Cut.

(They are currently playing "Chandelier".)

The Palme went to The Square, Jury Prize went to Loveless, and Nicole Kidman won the special 70th Anniversary Award.

I really don't understand why, after four years of fantastic choices, these past four years have all been middling choices for the top prize that really didn't seem to garner much enthusiasm from anyone I followed at all.

Worth re-watching Ostlund's Oscars non-nomination reaction.

? The Square got a lot more praise than the last couple top winners, and was frequently bandied around as a potential winner. Sounded very much like an outside the box film in line with what we know about the jury and not an embarrassment

Revelations from the jury so far: Almodovar didn't say so but appeared to have been outvoted on 120 BPM taking the top prize (though he strongly defended the Square, so hardly an acrimonious win); Will Smith loved the second-most reviled film of the competition slate, Jupier's Moon, but admits he was strongly outvoted; Chastain and Ade are unhappy with many of the depictions of women in this year's slate

A solid slate of winners, at any angle you look at it and considering the process of selecting the winners. My only quibble is wasting a prize on Nicole Kidman. She's a fine actress, of course, but that was another opportunity to award a film.

If I'm not mistaken, Coppola is the first female to win Best Director.

Ostlund is a good pick -- one of the three best films chez moi. I had only five films in the "B" range, and four of them (all but the Haneke) got prizes. And, somewhat surprisingly, none of the films in my "C" and "D" range got any prize. [I smartly avoided the Coppola and Akin as I'm sure they would've soiled my record.]

I know it wreaks of schadenfreude, but I'm happy to see that the Haynes and Hong and Safdies, all of which got some critical attention, were passed over in favor of the Lanthimos and Ramsay. Campillo and Zvyagintsev were uninspired but unobjectionable choices.

Pity that Ramsay didn't win for her film which would have been nice as a symbolic gesture but it'd appear that there was a greater consensus among the jury for The Square, 120 BAM and Loveless. Reports from the jury press conference say that Almodovar would seem to have been outvoted for 120 BAM for the Palme D'Or, and that The Square won by virtue of being everybody's second choice.

and Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor for the film. Two prizes out of seven (or eight, depending on how you count the tie) awarded is nothing to sniff at.

The awards are fine and will remain so tomorrow, but I cannot help but think of how they could have awarded two extra films with some maneuvering. Give Nicole Kidman Best Actress for The Beguiled, and Director and the 70th Prix are available. Granted, this would involve leaving off In the Cut (or giving it the 70th Prix), but I don't think too many people were enthused about that one. Stephen Frears's jury ten years ago used a 60th Prix to their advantage by awarding Paranoid Park; a piped-in Nicole Kidman isn't going to help films sell in territories or get eyes on them. But whatever, I still desperately want to see Personal Shopper and I, Daniel Blake.

This is essentially my way of saying that I hope Netflix does not acquire A Gentle Creature like they did with Aquarius.

Also, I was secretly hoping Will Smith was secretly pining for Hong or somesuch, but he apparently preferred the levitation thriller from a future Hollywood director.

But the "special prize" that Kidman was given isn’t some prize that gets awarded every year, some prize just sitting around to be given to a film. They wanted to give Kidman an award (for her body of work, for her presence in 4 projects showing at Cannes, for her longtime championing of and collaborations with arthouse directors, for whatever), so they kind of made this one up for the occasion. She didn’t “take” it from some film.

Let's not quote me on that, since I never used that word.

I'm just pointing out a missed opportunity to shine a light where one is needed. Nicole Kidman does not need this award and accepted it via a screen in Nashville. They might as well have not given it out.

Well, you're still talking as if it was some regular award that could have been given to somebody else instead of the 'undeserving' Kidman, so surely that's just semantics.

It seems pretty clear that they wanted to specifically acknowledge her and her work across a number of films at the festival. It's probably the least political / horse-tradable award that was given.
