Filling in another missing show gap, Daria is finally getting a proper DVD release next year. Almost all the details are forthcoming. :P

You can bet that almost all of the music will be replaced, but great news nonetheless

I can only remember the music in a few instances, but I can always remember the one-liners so it's not a big loss. Hopefully, they'll keep the REM song in the episode where they're stuck in the van with Trent because that's one part where the music was integral to the joke.

I bought a bootleg set a few years ago and was shocked at how many music cues there were. I think MTV had some sort of arrangement where the show could use anything in the library, and they took advantage. I can't wait for all the younger fans who only caught the show when it reran on the N to see the episodes restored to their pre-censored glory-- the series holds up remarkably well

Daria was one of those shows that I always heard was great, but only got to see a few episodes because, well, I wasn't supposed to be watching MTV. And by the time I was old enough for my parents to not care, it only came on at like 3am.

Definitely will Netflix it.

Domino, what censorship did Daria face? Or do you mean it did when it showed on the N?

I meant on the N. They cut out most of the swears and any references to sex or drinking, leaving some episodes literally incomprehensible. They also refused to air several episodes that took a controversial stand on hot topic issues for teens-- the one where one of the Fashion Club members gains weight and is ostracized was booted in whole, for instance. Ironically, any average episode of Degrassi was way bluer than Daria

Okay, thanks, I see now. They probably did it because "it's just a cartoon" but it's still ironic nonetheless. This kinda makes me want to see Degrassi now.

Daria: the Complete Series arrives May 11. Includes both of the movies and I'm sure none of the original music. Still, hooray!

Maybe there could be Mystik Spiral cover versions of the original music on an alternate audio track?

Apparently it has a couple of the original songs, but 99% has been replaced thanks to rights issues. More annoyingly, this is the second time they've put Is It College Yet? on DVD and its still the edited version. Doh!

About 10 minutes worth of material. You can see a transcript that highlights these parts at http://www.outpost-daria.com/ts_iicy.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A lot of those moments seem like dead time added to get to broadcast length with commercials, though

I've been sampling the Daria set and sometimes the music substitutions are okay, but one of the problems is that there's a limited amount of material to draw from, so the same music bits get repeated and often in inappropriate times. And the relevant songs that used to play over the end credits have been scrapped for the theme. Also, when you hit play-all, you're transported back to when MTV used to do Daria marathons: They lop off the opening credits and go right to the title card!

Actually, it's this way whether you hit play-all or not. Only the first episode on each disc contains the opening credits; the rest just start with the title card.

I really hope that's not as annoying as it sounds. I love the Daria theme and hearing it before each episode would be a nostalgic treat. I'm sure that ad nauseum it'd get old, but who edits out the opening of TV shows anyway? Or did MTV do it because the theme plays over the end titles now?

Fake trailer for a live action Daria movie starring Aubrey Plaza as Daria and Ian Roberts as Jake Morgendorffer. Utterly laugh free with the exception of Roberts' spot-on take on Daria's father, but still kinda neat-- though not as neat and dead-on as something like this, which was made with no famous people (and obv for a different animated show)

Aubrey Plaza does seem like a good fit but it mostly comes off like a gimmick. The Beets music video is brilliant.
