Man, to be fair the detail is great, but I'm not thrilled about the color timing, it looks a bit wrong. I've seen it on the big screen several times, but I don't recall it ever having that same look.

I've also seen the film several times on the big screen. I'd say that the old Lionsgate/Studio Canal Blu-ray, for all its faults, looks much more like what I recall. Maybe somewhere between the old Blu-ray and the Criterion DVD. Those bluish images just don't seem right.

This business of so many new BDs of older films having a pronouncedly weird teal/green/gray (or other) cast is ridiculous and upsetting, because it is objectively happening and it is inaccurate by any standard. Ran, Playtime, Je t'aime, je t'aime, Last Detail, Good, Bad, Ugly, all suffer from it. The detail and texture generally look fantastic on these discs, which is excellent because we cannot alter resolution at home -- while we can, somewhat, fuss with the color temperatures. Imagine how thrilled we'll all be in a couple years when 2001 is remastered to feature a baby blue spaceship.

It's as if all these new remasters are produced by Len Wiseman, or someone (or many people!) who are literally color blind. I don't understand it.

Maybe someone else can confirm this, but are the blue tinted prints from the 1960s and 1970s the result of many projection lamps having an orange-yellow color? My understanding is that film labs would time the blues and purples to compensate for this projection flaw -- particularly in European theaters.

If this is true then it would explain why many British, French, and German releases seem to be a bit bluer.

Or perhaps this is too simplistic. I'd love to hear if someone could confirm this.

Happy to report that I received my replacement Fallen Idol today in the mail (I reside in South Africa). Rather than just a replacement disc they sent me the complete new set.

Is there a way to tell if the copy we have is the corrected one?

If I receive a defective copy, I would like to know that (if possible) before removing the shrink-wrap. Hence the question.

There's an EAN for each release. 5055201831712 ties in with the release with the incorrect framing issue. 5055201833655 is for the corrected version.

For anyone who happens to be wondering the same about the foreign language Studio Canal editions, thought I'd just note that I picked up the German edition of "The Trial," and as Jonathan S noted, the disc seems to be exactly the same as the UK or French versions (with English subtitles available on all features), but the physical essay included with the Blu-ray is in fact translated into German. So buyer beware--I guess--if reading the essay is important to you. (And in the case of "The Trial," Rosenbaum published his essay online here, so no big loss!)

A new 4K restoration of Nicolas Roeg's The Man Who Fell To Earth will be released on a collector's edition Blu-Ray on October 10th, after a theatrical reissue.

To add more fuel to the Ran color timing debate, my friend who goes to school in Rochester posted that they were screening a 35mm print of the film. I asked him how the color looked in comparison to the blu-ray:
The 4k screen caps definitely look way closer to the 35mm than the previous DVDs/BDs. The colors in the film print are more muted than they look in the caps and the detail is softer too, but it looks pretty dead-on in terms of overall tone!

Blu-rays of Basil Dearden's Pool of London and The Blue Lamp, Ken Hughes' The Small World of Sammy Lee and Carol Reed's The Man Between this fall.

Very happy about the Deardens - not surprised about The Blue Lamp, it was a big hit in its day and has remained a 'known' film thanks to the (very) long-running TV series Dixon of Dock Green. However, Pool Of London is a surprise but a very welcome one - this is one of my favourite post-war Ealings (especially non-comedy) but is much less well known than Blue Lamp. IIRC, it barely gets mentioned in Charles Barr's definitive book on Ealing, unlike Blue Lamp which gets a lengthy write-up.
