The grotesqueness of a variety of Alamo associates is fairly well known. Not sure why this is news.

Because it's finally becoming more than "fairly" well known and they're finally being held accountable for it. Would you prefer that it remain innuendo and rumor?J Adams wrote:The grotesqueness of a variety of Alamo associates is fairly well known. Not sure why this is news.

I wasn't aware of it until the last few weeks or so: it's not the sort of thing that would really cross my radar, not being based in the US.

Same here, in Canada. In fact, I would argue after the Wonder Woman female-only-screenings promotion, the impression of Alamo Drafthouse outside of the areas where they operate was as a more safe-space, female-friendly environment than most places within the cinema community. I fully supported the idea of the screenings, but even I found some of the Alamo execs' tweets and statements to have a bit of a holier-than-thou tone to them, which makes these revelations all the more enlightening.MichaelB wrote:I wasn't aware of it until the last few weeks or so: it's not the sort of thing that would really cross my radar, not being based in the US.

Multiple sources confirm: Harry is a literal pantload (truly not for those with weak stomachs).

My brother and I always figured that's what he did so it's nice to get confirmation.@beaversbassoon: @NakatomiTim @headgeek666 When I think of Harry Knowles, all I can think about are when he'd make the theatre seats he left smell like his poop.

Re: Alamo Shafthouse
I think the whole "take out your phone and you get thrown out" thing, which I agree with in principle totally, is ultimately indicative of a broader "we're telling you how to be comfortable" culture that's very not progressive and somewhat implicitly patriarchal/"mansplain"-y. I'm assuming this will blow over and the Leagues will resign or step to a lower position or something because they clearly did not bother to insulate themselves whatsoever from any of this. They're expanding hugely - I can't speak nationally but they're opening two locations in the DC metro area in the next 18 months (the only one in the area is an hour out of the city), and I was at least tentatively excited considering DC's got a relative lack of rep theaters as far as major markets go (it's still better than a lot of other places, obviously). But I have a really hard time imagining how anyone in good conscience can continue going to these theaters while this management is still in place.willoneill wrote:Same here, in Canada. Re: Alamo Shafthouse
He does really seem to have had an extremely low level of maturity encouraged and cheered on through the years, and it seems to have carried over into his personal conduct and (jeez) hygiene. For a 45 year old man to be so thoughtless to others and wantonly disgusting is something else. I can't say I ever understood the appeal of AICN, nor the writing there, even when I was very young and would've theoretically been the target audience for it. I'm not sure who ever was the target audience.
Is Knowles now barred from going to the Drafthouse?

Re: Alamo Shafthouse
I don't think it's that surprising that Knowles became a thing- I think he neatly caught the tide of breathless fanboyism for franchises and superheroes that has since come to totally dominate blockbuster filmmaking, and took it at the flood. It's surprising that he is still a thing 15-20 years later, though- maybe he's such a neat, self contained caricature of what he represents that he just occupied the spot perfectly.
I must say, though, if you made a movie in which you wanted to make fun of entertainment reporting of the kind he represents, having him shit his pants during screenings seems like it would come off as going too far- he's now such a self caricature than an actual caricaturist would consider him inartistically drawn.

That's a great observation - he is a particularly lazy South Park exaggeration, but as an actual person

I've been explaining to people for decades now that Harry Knowles is based on Comic Book Guy and not the other way around.

Jesus, every time I see the title of this thread, it evokes the imagery of a grisly Davy Crockett porn flick.

Hah, actually yes - the logical acceptance that a fort from that era would need to utilize quite a few outhouses somehow makes it less disgusting.

I was going to make the "shut yo mouth" joke as a reference to the Issac Hayes song. But after reading the last several posts I have to be more blunt. Regarding the man's BM issues, please shut up.

I haven't even thought about AICN for years until I opened this thread. It has always been an utterly stupid platform.
If one or more of the Alamos are imprisoned, I can only be thankful. Their movie house concept manages to be pretentious, lowbrow, rapey and calorific. It's like a Michael Haneke film with french fries.

A guy like Faracci immediately gains 25 patrons and Adrian Martin is still stuck at 49.
